This post highlights 3 special needs superheroes who are using their gifts to make the special needs community and the world a better place.

The superhero world has been busy, busy, busy recently. In fact, a conflagration of posts at the intersection of superheros and special needs has me thinking a new superhero movement is gathering steam in the stratosphere.

Special Needs Superhero #1: Max

The movement came to my attention in September with Ellen Seidman’s post about her son’s special powers. If you haven’t read it yet, you’ll want to. Be sure to scroll down to the end of the post and check out the related posts listed there. Apparently, super powers were manifesting themselves long before I was aware of them.

Special Needs Superhero #2:Ā  Bloomview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital

The second superhero sighting occurred at BLOOM, an excellent blog hosted by Holland Bloomview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. (The hospital is located in Ontario, Canada and the website is a fantastic resource.) Susan Taylor posted an article about her son Jacob, age 6, and his adult friend Kirk. Together, they designed a custom superhero logo for Jacob’s new ankle-foot orthotics. Now they’re forming a non-profit organization to design superhero logos for other kids. Cool, huh?

Special Needs Superhero #3: HomeSchooling Site

The third superhero sighting was at www.specialneedshomeschooling.com where Heather Laurie posted a product review for Power Capes. Her daughter with autism put on her custom power cape (purchasers can choose the color, letter, design, and extra sparkle) and immediately engaged in imaginative play.

Put Them Together and What Do You Get?

Put the three ideas together and what do you get? I’m not quite sure, but the results could be spectacular. If this conflagration of superhero sightings sparks a new idea for you and your child, please leave a comment.
